Paul's "Take a ride in an FA18" YouTube got me thinking about my list of best looking fighters ever. Here's my top 10 in roughly chronological order.

I said best looking not prettiest because at least a couple - the Tempest and the F4 Phantom for example - are brutish. But this is a personal list... they just appeal to me most.

If pretty were the word, I couldn't split the Spitfire, the 'Stang and the Hornet.

My best looking fighter of all time is the Spitfire.

But I like the "interim" Griffon versions the best - the XII and the XIV.

The XII

The XIV

The versions with the normal wing tips and original style canopy are the best IMO.

The title on this video is incorrect - there was no such thing as an LF.XIVe.

LF Spitfires had Merlins of lower altitude ratings - the LF.IX had the Merlin 66, the HF.IX had the Merlin 70 and the original F.IX had the Merlin 63.

All production XIVs had the Griffon 65.

The reason that some XIVs were clipped was because some had experienced skin wrinkling (localised buckling) on the wing, and the RAF ordered that the clipped wing tips be intsalled (it was a bolt up job). This was despite Joe Smith (Mitchell's successor as design chief at Supermarine) advsing that it was unecessary.

Most XIIs had the clipped wings as they were low altitude aircraft, though not designated LF, due to the single stage Griffon. The clipped wings allowed much increased roll rate, which allowed it to deal with the Fw 190 (teh best fighter in roll) better.

Based purely on looks alone my favourite fighter was the FIAT G 55

10 Best looking fighters. Ever! FIAT_G-55_Centauro_(1)

The Germans thought it was so good that they decided to build them for themselves.

The Macchi C205 & the Reggianne C 2005 were great lookers also.

My 2nd favourite was always the Mig 3 & maybe even my favourite.

The MiG 3 does look awesome, kinda like a racer rather than a fighter.

They are both fine looking aircraft, Obee! I can well see how you would include them in your top ten.

It does indeed look more like a racer than a fighter but I just love the proportions & the lines.

I don't know why, it might be something to do with my age & my perception of beautiful but I find the forward sweeping wings on the on Sukhoi S 37 out of kilter with the rest of the plane.

I agree, Obee. One presumes there must be some aerodynanic advantage arising from the wing design. I can't see it so I think I'll nip round the corner to ask my knowledgable friend Mr. Google. If you get to him first, there's a good chap and give us the heads up.

Penn, I'm not sure what you are asking, I am presuming you can't see the image that Wuzak posted if so this is the S 37

He's trying to find what the advantage of fsw design is.

IIRC, its like swept wings vs straight wings, but the airflow doesn't spill off the wing tip.

There are some structural disadvantages, though.

In the same vein, other WW 11 fighters which I thought were lookers were the Reggianne 2005

See... there's the thing. You took it all so personally. I have it on good authority that Herrmann Göring considered you a cute little tacker.

Interesting story about the A-36. The British had ordered some P-51s (as Mustand Is and Mustang IIs), but the USAAF didn't have money in teh budget to buy any more fighters. So they got NAA to slap on some dive brakes, add a rack and called it a dive bomber. It was enough to keep the factory turning over until the P-51B arrived.

Look... sometimes we start off on the wrong foot with people. That quote was a beat up by the Communist inspired press. Hermy had no truck with Die Engländer. Nor did Addy. It was a huge misunderstaning, or Mißverständnis as ve say im Vaterland.

Which does bring me to a true story. You can choose, mein alter Freund, to believe it, oder nicht!

I have an Aussie friend who spent his entire career in the motor industry. The fool. In the early eighties he was the Marketing Manager of BMW Australia. At this point I should say that for some reason his accent was somewhere between Cheam and Virginia Water. Blessed if I know why but it's an important point as you, Baubs, will soon discover.

Once a year, my mate - let's call him Johnny Mac - visited Der Vaterland to deliver a presentation on the market in the Wide Brown Land. He would arrive at Frankfurt International to be swished in a 7 Series to the corporate Kommandozentral in München. On this occasion, the black 7 Series was occupied by a driver, Johnny Mac and two senior figures from deep within the bunker. You must at this point factor in that the jolly 1939-45 adventure was less than 40 years in the past. People who were old enough to have spilt blood were by now senior executives all around Europe.

So there's Johnny Mac in the back of the 7 Series, swishing down the Autobahn at Warp 2 surrounded by leather, timber and two heavy hitters. Unerwartet as we say, HH1 turned to JM and said: " You know.. your man Churchill was stupid."

This was unexpected (Unerwartet) to say the least so JM meekly replied, "Why so, Bernd?"

"Why so? Warum??? We were never enemies, Das Dritte Reich und England. Der Führer never saw England as the enemy. We are the same stock. We are Aryans. Together, we could have ruled the world. We never understood why Churchill was - was sagen Sie? - so obstinate."

Ein true story. And this is the reason why I bought the storyline in Freddy Forsyth's book, The Odessa File.

Why should I doubt the veracity of your post Penn? You a man of impeccable credentials! I think is fairly well known that Adolf would have been happy to ally with the British, but then he was a German/Austrian, whatever.

I like the story of the ex-RAF man who went to Germany and was asked at if he had been to Hamburg before. He replied that the last time he had seen Hamburg was from 50,000 feet and it was lit up.

Perhaps we could start a new section extolling the merits of different kinds of rifles and handguns, and other weapons of destruction, after all that is what the aircraft depicted here are!

NO! No! I'm not moralizing just being bl**dy minded, (for a change).

Heil Hitler!

I was wondering if the bloke got around to mentioning that Churchill wasn't prime minister till 1940 . Not to mention anything that fekin Nazi signed, whether it be to ally with or not attack, was rescinded at his leisure .

Paul as you know, WSC was the lone voice during the 30's warning the UK government and anyone else who would listen about what he perceived as the danger Hitler posed. It made him something of a pariah.

Famously, he didn't get on with Bernard Shaw. One day he received an invitation to the opening night of Shaw's latest play in London. The invitation entreated him to bring a friend.... "if you have one."

WSC sent a reply, apologising that he was unable to attend the first night and added that he would be delighted to attend the second night... "If there is one." Very Happy

Yes he knew the Nazi threat and nobody listened, which was as per usual with the arrogant British hierarchy at the time.
If anyone believes, or did believe that Hitler was our friend ( or Merkel for that matter) he , she or it, is and was very much mistaken.

The story I heard was a British airline pilot was heading to Germany, can't remember which city, may have been Hamburg, but he was having problems locating the airport.

He asked for directions to which the air traffic controller, the reply came back "Haven't you been here before?"

The British pilot responded: "I have many years ago, but I didn't stop".

Years ago, my boss in Nestlé Sydney was talking to a visiting Nestlé Regional Director. Chap's name was Bignami as I recall. Signor Bignami asked my boss whether he had ever been to Italy. This discomfited my boss who stumbled out a muffled, "yes".

"Oh." says Bignami, "where did you go?"
"Er, Turin as I recall", replies boss, very much on the back foot.
"Ah Torino, my home town!" - Bignami, devilishly. "Were you, by any chance, in the RAF at the time?"
Game's up... "Well yes, I was a gunner on Lancasters."
"Ah! So we have something in common, Mr McDonald, I was a young man on the anti-aircraft batteries in Torino. I was trying to kill you!"
